Allergens & Food Allergies
In India an estimated 6 million people suffer from food allergies. A food allergy, or hypersensitivity, is an abnormally robust response to a food item triggered by the immune system. This severe reaction is responsible for 30,000 hospitalizations and 350 deaths a year in India. Currently there is no cure for allergies; the only way a person who suffers from this ailment can prevent an allergic reaction is to identify certain foods responsible for such a reaction and avoid eating them.
Products which commonly cause food allergies in adults are shrimp, lobster, crab, and other shellfish, peanuts, walnuts and other tree nuts, fish and eggs. Children are often afflicted by eggs, milk, peanuts, soy, wheat, peanuts, tree nuts fish and shrimp.
Common symptoms of an allergic reaction to food include:
  • Tingling sensation in the mouth
  • Swelling of the tongue and throat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Hives
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Drop in blood pressure
  • Loss of consciousness and death
  • Food Allergens - Recalls
With awareness of food allergens gaining more exposure from both the media and regulatory agencies, FDA (Food & Drug Administration) has increased its surveillance for products which do not comply with the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. In addition the government enacted the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act which processors must be in compliance with. As a result the number of recalls due to undeclared allergens has increased significantly.
TQS GLOBAL can assist your firm with:
  • Local Regulatory Compliance
  • Proper product labeling
  • Employee education
  • Processing GMP's
  • Recalls due to undeclared allergens
  • Crisis & Recall Services - Food Safety
What is a Food Safety Crisis? It is any unplanned event that triggers a real, or perceived, threat to the safety, health, or environment of consumers, customers or employees.
If a crisis, such as a recall, is not handled well, it will not only impact those who have been involved, but also have a negative impact on a company's reputation-ultimately resulting in lower sales and/or lower stock prices. In some cases, it may put the very survival of a company at risk.
The best time to plan for a Crisis is before it occurs-not when it is occurring. With proper planning, training and testing of the program, a crisis can be managed to minimize the short and long-term negative effects.
TQS Global can help you adequately plan for the Crisis Situation. This type of assistance can include any or all of the following activities:
  • Conduct a Crisis and/or Recall Readiness Check-Up-based on an existing plan.
